中文摘要：王云五发明了四角号码法,日本图书馆学家间宫不二雄认为该法可直接应用于编制汉字索引,并将其称为汉字直接索引法,具有音序和部首等检字法无法比拟的优点,因而将其翻译推广,在日本学术界产生了较大影响。文章揭示四角号码法传入日本并得到推广应用的过程,再现中日两国图书馆界在探索解决汉字排检法这个共同难题方面进行的探索和交流。尽管随着教育普及和计算机技术的发展,汉字排检不再困难,但中日两国图书馆员在包括汉字排检法等人类知识组织方面进行的探索是值得尊敬的。

外文摘要：Four-corner Numeral System,which was proposed by Y.W.WONG,was first introduced into Japan by MA Zongrong in 1928.Then Fujio Mamiya,a Japanese library scholar,became interested in this new system for looking up Chinese characters.Since this system could be used directly to compile an index of Chinese characters,he named it as“Direct Indexing Method for Chinese Characters”.In consideration of its incomparable advantages in indexing Chinese characters,Fujio Mamiya translated the Four-corner Numeral System into Japanese and made it popular in Japanese academia.This paper makes a historical survey of the introduction and promotion of WONG’Four-corner Numeral System in Japan,especially the interactions between Chinese and Japanese library scholars in solving the common problems of arranging Chinese characters.With the popularization of education and the development of IT technologies,the arrangement of Chinese character has become an easy thing,but the attempts of modern Chinese and Japanese library scholars in this filed still deserve our respect.
